Samsung and LG announce wearable tech ahead of IFA


Just a week is left for the IFA 2014 to kick off and things have already started getting unveiled. LG and Samsung, both have announced new smart watches that will be unveiled at the IFA. Samsung Gear S is a Tizen-powered 3G smartwatch, whereas, LG G Watch R is a Moto 360 competitor running on Android.


The Samsung Gear S smartwatch features a 2-inch Super AMOLED (360×480 pixels) display and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 512MB of RAM. Also featured is 4GB of internal storage, 3,000mAh battery that the company claims is good enough to survive two days, and IP67 certification that makes the smartwatch resistant to water and dust. It runs on Tizen and can work even without a phone!

Samsung also unveiled Gear Circle headset, a pair of Bluetooth headsets that will allow users to receive calls, listen to music and give voice commands.

Both the Gear S smartwatch and Gear Circle will be unveiled at Samsung’s pre-IFA event on September 3, and will be launched in global markets from October onwards.

The LG G Watch R will have a 1.3-inch Plastic OLED display with 320×320 pixels resolution. It will run on a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor paired with 512MB RAM. The smartwatch also offers 4GB of internal memory and will pack a 410mAh battery. The operating system on the smartwatch will be Android Wear (compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above). The smartwatch is dust and water resistant with an IP67 rating with the company claiming that the watch is designed to run for up to 30 minutes in one meter of water. LG G Watch R will be available only in black color with an interchangeable 22mm calf skin leather strap.

LG has not revealed the price but has hinted that LG G Watch R will reach select markets by the fourth quarter of 2014.
